Zimmer, Lorne Carl

August 3, 1939 – May 19, 2012
Lorne, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 50 years and children at his side on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Coronation Hospital & Care Centre at the age of 72 years.  Lorne was born in Daysland, Alberta August 3, 1939 to George and Theresa (Wolbeck) Zimmer.  In 1959 Lorne moved to Edmonton and began his life long career in the tire business.  On September 16, 1961 Lorne married the love of his life Janet Kusk.  Out of this joyous union five children were born, Mark, Roxanne, Tammy, Timothy and Jody.  In 1964 Lorne took a gamble and moved his young family to Coronation and opened the doors of Coronation Tire & Rubber. Lorne with his business and life partner Janet owned and operated “The Shop” tirelessly for 48 years.  Their sacrifice and commitment to each other built a legacy.  Customer Service was his number one priority.  He often would miss out on special occasions or family functions due to a stranded stranger or a service call.  It was so important to him that everyone got to where they needed to be or their business was not delayed further.

In 1969 Lorne purchased his first piece of land which he explained was only a “Hobby Farm”.  Over the years his hobby eventually turned into a business, which required much more than his “spare” time.  Lorne enjoyed getting away from the tire shop to spend time on the tractor and tend to the cattle.  Lorne had such vigorous ambition in all of his endeavours.  His business sense was strong, his memory vast and his heart generous.  He had no need for computers or calculators in his businesses as he stored every piece of information in his head, and could quickly recall it at any moment, “it was safe there” he would say.  Lorne was an avid supporter of his community, having been a member of the Lions and Kinsmen clubs.  He served as councillor for the Town of Coronation for over a decade.  Many community projects including the addition to the front of the arena, the new swimming pool and the water tower project, were in part due to Lorne’s aggressive and passionate visions for his community.
He was especially proud of Janet, for her devotion to the community in which they raised their family.  He did however joke occasionally that her efforts were at a cost to his wellbeing.
Despite all the long hours of hard physical labour, Lorne was always there for his family.  When he could he loved to watch his kids and grandkids play baseball and hockey and attend their piano and school concerts. They all made him so proud.  Lorne’s rough and tough exterior camouflaged the tender heart he fought to protect.  He could not stand to watch anyone down and out and often went out of his way to help a soul in need.  Lorne will be remembered by his friends for his smart remarks, kind heart and generosity.  His family will remember his love, support, determination and spirit. Forever in our hearts and always apart of our souls.
Lorne is survived by loving wife of 50 years Janet; his children; Mark (Lea) Zimmer and their children, Morgan, Ryan and Sarah Zimmer; Roxanne (Reg) Zimmer and their children, Chelcie Zimmer (Greg Dalueg)- Braxyn (great-grandchild), Lance (Dorinda) Zimmer – Korben (great-grandchild) and Spencer Zimmer; Tammy (Barrie) Pengelly and their children, Frazer Pengelly, Barrie (Kristie) Pengelly – Brooklyn, Tanton, Bradley Pengelly, Bridget – Carter, Parker, Tate, Jayden; Tim Zimmer and his children, Trey and Carver Zimmer; Jody (Shawn) Sunstrum and their children Jackson and Hallie Sunstrum; six brothers and two sisters as well as three brothers-in law.
