Barbara Brookman Wallace (nee Wager) was born in Coronation, Alberta on March 24, 1918 and died peacefully in Ladysmith, BC on November 12, 2011. She was born to a pioneering family, and rode to school on horseback. At the age of 18, she moved with her parents, Clarence and Elizabeth Wager to Vancouver Island. Barbara’s uncle, Lester stayed on in Coronation to run the Wager family farm. In 1941 Barbara married Bob Wallace of Cedar, BC. They had two children, Lynn and Greg.
Once her children were in school, Barbara took up employment with Vancouver Island Power Commission, a predecessor of BC Hydro. Following her retirement from BC Hydro, Barbara ran for the provincial legislature. She represented the NDP as the MLA for Cowichan-Malahat for three terms, from 1975 to 1987. After the completion of her political career, she was an active member of the Cedar Women’s Institute. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, husband and daughter. She is mourned by her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Judy Wallace of Cedar, BC, granddaughter Jessica, grandson Jordan, great grandson Ezra and extended family.
