Village of Big Valley will have by-election Feb. 20

Written by Stu Salkeld

It looks like Village of Big Valley residents will be heading to the polls in 2024, and they will have plenty of options to choose from in an upcoming by-election.

Nominations for two vacant council seats closed Jan. 24 with four candidates stepping forward.

Village Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and returning officer Colleen Mayne confirmed in a phone call with the ECA Review newspaper Jan. 25 that four candidates declared for the by-election to fill two council seats, meaning there will be an election.

Big Valley residents should note the by-election date is Tues. Feb. 20 as the day before is a stat holiday, Family Day.

Mayne provided candidate names in alphabetical order: Timmothy Field, Chantel Janke, Elaine Macdonald and Harry Nibourg.

While there are two council vacancies the third seat remains occupied by Coun. Dan Houle. However, until two councillors are elected and sworn in, the village remains under the stewardship of Official Administrator (OA) Gene Sobolewski.

The returning officer stated she is planning an event such as an all-candidates forum where the four can introduce themselves and answer questions from the public. No date or time has been set for that yet.
