Trucker caught driving impaired over May long weekend

Written by ECA Review

The Oyen RCMP received a complaint of a semi tractor-trailer being operated erratically on Highway 9 near Oyen, Alta., on May 16, 2020 at 8 p.m.

The complainant alleged the tractor-trailer was failing to maintain its driving lane, was swerving, nearly went into the ditch and almost hit a median.

Redcliff Traffic Services, Oyen RCMP and a Special Areas peace officer immediately responded to the complaint.

The semi tractor-trailer was located by Redcliff Traffic Services and driving behaviour consistent with the complaint was observed by the member.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver failed a roadside screening breath test.

The driver was arrested and provided breath samples at the Oyen detachment that were twice the legal limit.

The semi tractor-trailer was a b-train hauling grain.

The semi-tractor was seized under Provincial legislation while the trailers were released.

We would like to thank the public for calling this in.

This action was directly responsible for being able to quickly locate the vehicle and remove it from the road averting a potentially disastrous situation from happening.

The driver is being charged with impaired operation of a conveyance contrary to Section 320.14 of the Criminal Code.

The name of the driver is not being released as the charge has not yet been sworn.
