Ten hour standoff leads to arrest

Stettler RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Secondary Highway 601, near Pheasantback Golf Course.

The vehicle began travelling at excessive speeds and failed to stop for police on August 2, 2019 at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The driver and lone occupant was known to police and was identified as 23-year-old Richard George.

A police pursuit was not initiated given the potential risk to the public.

Police later attended the George residence where he brandished a shotgun.

The Stettler RCMP with the assistance of the Bashaw RCMP contained the area and the RCMP Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Service (PDS) were deployed.

George was taken into custody without incident after a ten-hour standoff.

Richard George appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded in custody on the following charges: Flight From police x2, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle x2, Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Breach of a release document x7, Possession of methamphetamine and Offences under provisions of Traffic Safety Act.

Richard George is set to appear in Stettler Provincial Court come August 8, 2019.
