TD Bank, no negotiations

Dear Editor,
A small group of concerned Coronation citizens met with two TD Bank vice presidents on March 28, 2024 to discuss the closure of the Coronation branch including Ron Checkel, Coronation town councillor and George Glazier, County of Paintearth councillor and tried to make them understand how the bank and staff are an integral part of our town and country.

As a previous Community Futures board member and an ex-banker, I discussed the fact that the Coronation branch was, and is, profitable.

The TD representatives did not deny this fact.

Herb Rock and Ted Bullick tried to get any possible concessions such as branch staffed two days a week, an ATM machine, branch staffed one day a week, anything! But theose suggestions were shot down immediately.

“We didn’t come to negotiate” stated one of the representatives, “we only came as we were invited.”
This decision was made six months ago, well before they posted the closure sign on the door.

In November 2023 the TD bank announced that they were cutting 3000 Canadian jobs and it seems like the Coronation branch is considered low hanging fruit.

The TD bank should be ashamed as to how this has been handled, and the fact that they are closing their oldest Alberta branch, and one that is still profitable.
