‘Still work to be done’ on contaminated lot in Castor

Kyla Downey, who is an Environmental Consultant, joined Castor town council at the regular meeting on Jan 8, 2018 to answer any questions and give a professional opinion regarding an environmental site assessment report prepared by Parkland Geotechnical Consulting.
The assessment focuses on the former Home Hardware lot at 5002 – 51 Street. The site was used for many different purposes in the past, including, a farm implement dealer, a lumber yard, a wholesale distribution of gasoline, a gasoline barrel filling station and a storage location for barrels of gasoline, kerosene and lubricating oils.
The town has been working with Alberta Environment for the past few years, providing updates and plans regarding the site.
The report was prepared after an impacted area was removed from the site and used to show Alberta Environment the status of contamination.
“There is still work to be done on the site,” states Downey.

Asset management
Councillor Lonny Nelner made a motion for the town to create an Asset Management Committee. The formation of this committee will provide accurate and consistent tracking of Castor’s various assets.
The new committee will consist of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Assistant CAO, Town Foreman, and one representative from each of Castor’s water and gas utilities. They will meet at least once a year and report to council annually.
