The Stettler Storm U19 girls’ softball team came away with a gold medal in provincials in Sherwood Park July 6 – 8. This completed a string of four undefeated tournament gold medal wins this year, as they went undefeated in Stettler, Calgary, Okotoks and Sherwood Park.
Stettler was 4 – 0 in round robin play in Sherwood Park, beating Calahoo, Calgary, Okotoks, and Edmonton. Sunday saw them play in the semifinals against Okotoks and defeated them 12 – 1. This placed Stettler in the finals against Edmonton High Park, which they had not yet played. The Storm came away with a hard-fought emotionally charged victory of 13 – 6, winning the gold.
For some of these girls on the Stettler team, this was their third provincial gold medal at the minor ball level. The team is made of girls and coaches from the Stettler area. Coach Rick Stotz said the key to the girls’ success this year was a drama free cohesive bunch of young women that were humble and had great respect for their coaches, the game and their opponents.
