A façade depicting historic businesses will line one wall of Stettler’s new downtown park at the corner of 50 Avenue and 50 Street.
At the Sept. 15 meeting, town council agreed the construction would be the best option to cover one of the two concrete walls that encompass the park.
The park sits at the old Stettler Travel building site, which was donated to the town by Don and Sylvia Peters following demolition of the building. The hope of the Peters family was that the park would be dedicated to pioneer businesses of Stettler.
The Carl Stettler monument that currently sits along the sidewalk corner of the park will also receive some additional work. Currently, one side of the monument is blank. Council agreed to add Carl Stettler’s image and name to the monument.
The monument was moved to the downtown location to give it a more prominent location.
“This is an important focal point of the town now,” stated Coun. Malcolm Fischer.
Funding increase
“I’m thrilled that FCSS will be receiving additional resources,” stated Mayor Dick Richards regarding notice of a provincial funding increase of $10 million to Family and Community Support Services.
The funding represents a two per cent increase for each of the last five years for a total of 10 per cent. Communities that have seen a population increase will receive additional funding.
Promoting Stettler
Destination Stettler’s new website is up and running and ready to promote Stettler. The site provides information about events, activities, lodging and dining in Stettler.
According to Coun. Sean Nolls, a number of Stettler organizations host events that aren’t being promoted effectively. Nolls hopes the new site, destinationstettler.com, will encourage local organizations to get on board with promoting events and activities in Stettler.
Stettler recognized
Communities in Bloom informed Stettler that the town is a finalist for the 2015 Environmental Action Award and the Youth Involvement Award. This year’s symposium and awards ceremonies will be held in Kamloops, BC Sept. 30 to Oct. 3.
