Stettler Midget Girls Hockey Team wins league, zones

After a full season including 16 games in the last 37 days, the Stettler Midget Female hockey team has become both Zone 7 Champions and Rocky Mountain Female Hockey League (RMFHL) North Champions.

The girls bested Lacoka and Warburg in earlier playoff rounds to earn their spot in the league finals.

The team travelled to Whitecourt on Sat. March 9 to battle the Whitecourt Wolverines for the league championship where they won the first game of the best of three series 5 – 1.

Stettler goals were scored by Brooke Laisnez, Gabby Heck, Morgyn Jordahl, Abby Heidecker and Keely Adams.

In the return game in Stettler on Sun. March 10, the girls were victorious, winning the second game 3 – 2 claiming the League Championship.

Scoring for Stettler was Heck, Paige Kobberstad and Adams.

Goalie Morgan Bengert faced 70 shots over the course of the two games.

The team also claimed the Zone 7 Championship after winning two Playdown series’ against Wainwright and Sherwood Park respectively.

They now advance to the Midget B Female Provincial Championships taking place in Leduc from March 21 – 24.

While based in Stettler, the team is a true representation of east-central Alberta with members coming from the communities of Stettler, Castor, Coronation, Elnora, Forestburg, Hanna and Halkirk.
