Stettler Imperials propose facility upgrades

Proposed facility upgrades to the blue arena at the Stettler Recreation Centre were discussed at the Town of Stettler regular council meeting on Aug 6.

The Stettler Imperials senior hockey team presented a series of proposed facility upgrades to the Town of Stettler council, seeking approval for three enhancements to improve the experience for both players and patrons. Three upgrades have been put forward with the team having offered to fund the upgrades entirely, with no financial burden on the town.

The first upgrade is to dressing room one, where the Imperials would like to install professional wood locker stalls, benches and shelving as well as paint that complements the existing facility colours.

The room would be used by the Imperials during home games and practices, with other groups having access at other times. The project, estimated to cost between $10,000 and $12,000, would be completed using local contractors.

Secondly the Imperials would like to add special effects lighting to the blue arena which would enhance user experience. The lighting, including spotlights and special effect controls, would primarily be used during Imperial games and special events like provincial tournaments and graduations. The installation is expected to take one to two days and also cost between $10,000 and $12,000.

Finally the Imperials would like to install dimmable recessed lighting in the board and meeting rooms upstairs. The upgrade would align with a planned window project. The cost is estimated to be around $5,000, depending on power requirements and availability.

“They have been a model organization,” noted Brad Robbins, manager of recreation and culture, adding that the team fundraises for different groups and strives to bring the community together.

“It’s great to see groups investing in town infrastructure,” expressed Coun. Kirk Baker.

“It will be a pretty neat enhancement,” said Robbins.

“My concern is that there may be conflict with a private room,” expressed Mayor Sean Nolls. Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Leann Graham noted that the town reserves the right for the use and rentals of the facilities.

Council passed a motion allowing the Stettler Imperials to proceed with the upgrades, contingent on an agreement between the team and town administration. This agreement would outline project roles, responsibilities and timelines as well as a declaration holding the town harmless from any contractor-related claims.

Additionally, contractors must complete a facility safety orientation and the Town of Stettler must be added as an additional insured party on the Stettler Imperials’ liability policy.
