Smook is the chair of the Beaver Emergency Services Commission and the Tofield and Area Health Services Foundation and is a member of the Battle River Alliance for Economic Development.

He obtained his real estate license in 1994 and opened his own brokerage in 1999 and is a member of the Arbitration and Professional Standards Committee with the Realtors Association of Edmonton.

Smook has also been involved with the Camrose Kodiaks since 2009 as the backup play by play voice for their radio broadcasts.
