Municipal Accountability Program

Written by ECA Review

The Town of Coronation is currently undergoing the Municipal Accountability Program (MAP) by Municipal Affairs.

During this process, it was found the designated officers bylaw from 2014 was not descriptive enough in how each department works and what the true position of a bylaw officer was.

It was recommended that the town utilize and manipulate a template to better suit the community and then adopt it to be in line with MAP.

Council passed all three readings of the bylaw which brought everything up to date in this regard at their regular meeting on Mon. Sept. 27.

Parkland Library budget

Parkland Regional Library presented partners with the 2022 budget which includes requested requisition from each community involved.

Coronation will be paying $8.55 per capita which was noted to be on par with the last couple of years.

Council approved the budget.

Stat holiday considered

It was proposed by the federal government in June that municipalities will have the option to observe a statutory holiday on Sept. 30 for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day is meant to observe the history of residential schools and make steps towards helping aboriginal peoples.

Council felt that with the short time frame to prepare, the best option was to acknowledge the day rather than make it a statutory holiday for employees.

Special meeting

A special meeting took place on Mon. Sept. 20 where council passed a few motions including a follow-up decision on the town’s website.

Council has allowed administration to move forward with the contract with Box Cleaver and add an additional $1,840 for the transfer of the current website information, data and design work.

A couple of closed-session items were also addressed.

The first closed session was to discuss ‘privileged information relating to; FOIP – Section 17 – Third party personal privacy’ where they went in at 7:05 p.m.

Mayor Ron Checkel declared pecuniary interest and removed himself from the closed session.

Once back in public conversation, it was moved by Coun. Jackie Brigley that the town provide a counteroffer for the land located at 5006 Royal Street, Lot: 3 Block 12 Plan: PLAN8149AH for $7,500 as is with no additional clean up, or if the purchaser wishes they can purchase the land for $11,500 and the town will conduct the removal of the trees and sidewalks located on the property which was carried.

The current assessed value of the land is $11,500.

Council then moved into closed session again at 7:16 for a matter related to FOIP – Section 27 – Legal.

Dep. Mayor Mark Stannard declared conflict of interest and subsequently left council chambers and the discussion.

No motions were conducted after this closed session.
