McKenzie, Ada Irene

Ada Irene McKenzie (nee Ekman) was born on March 22, 1925 at home near Fleet, Alberta, the second daughter of Carl Ekman and Thea Vigen.  Ada attended Kimberly School, later graduated from Fleet High School, attended Normal School and then taught in Castor for several years.  Ada loved playing first base for the Fleet women’s ball team which was locally famous, going as far away as Manning AB and making it to Provincials.
Ada married Alexander Brown McKenzie on April 18, 1949 in Calgary, Alberta.  They had five children – Lynne Maureen, Sherry Lee, Warren Blair, Donna Joan and Gwen Marie.  Ada and Al realized their dream by building a home in Fleet -this sturdy home still stands on a beautifully landscaped five acres with a huge garden.

Her beloved husband Al died on June 30, 1970 at the young age of 46. With great courage and conviction, Ada kept home life stable, loving and secure, raising Blair, Donna and Gwen, seeing them through to graduate grade 12 and go on to further education. Later with only two children at home, Ada became very involved with the Fleet and Castor communities. She taught Sunday school and was president and secretary of the Women’s Institute (WI).
Ada particularly enjoyed family holiday gatherings and summer holidays at Gull Lake and Mara Lake.  These left her with memories of so many happy times – playing cards, swimming, volleyball, campfires, singing, treasure hunts and the delicious food.   The more time she spent with her family, the happier she was.
Ada loved her family, her home and her garden –she was growing, canning, freezing and pickling garden produce right up to 2011. Ada was also very active – started downhill skiing in her early 60’s at Lake Louise and cross country skiing at Fleet and enjoyed hiking in the mountains around Canmore until well into her 80’s.
She enjoyed excellent health living independently on her Fleet acreage until suffering three strokes between September 6, 2011 and October 11, 2012.  With her loving children all present, Ada died peacefully a week later on October 18, 2012 in the Coronation Continuing Care Center at the age of 87.
Ada leaves to mourn – her children, Lynne McKenzie; Sherry (David) Robyn and Tiffany Sinclair; Blair (Julia) Joel, Leah, April and Daniel McKenzie; Donna (Gary) Nathan and Landon Hutchison; Gwen and Cassia McKenzie, as well as many extended family members.  She will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by her parents – Carl and Thea Ekman, husband Al, sisters Laura and Eileen and sisters-in-law Edna, Alice, Mabel, Janet and Lea and brother-in-law Bob McKenzie.
A celebration of Ada’s life was held on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 1 pm at the Trinity United Church, Coronation, Alberta, with Reverend Sue Hertell officiating. Tricia Kirby played for the congregational hymns, “In The Garden” and “How Great Thou Art”. There were many tributes and fond memories shared; from the children; Blair McKenzie and Sherry Sinclair; grandchildren, Joel, Tiffany, Cassia; nieces, Sonia Karran and Carol Davis; friends and caregivers, Dawna Elliott, Linda Goulet and Lenore Anderson.
Scripture readings were by Ada’s daughters, Donna Hutchison and Gwen McKenzie.  There was also a video tribute before the service as well as during the family tribute. Special music was by Sherry Sinclair, Wendy Dunkle and Josie Neilson. Active pallbearers Brian Bunbury, Sonia Karran, Wayne Bliesner, Leslie Wetter, Linda Klippenstein and John McKenzie; honourary pallbearers were all of Ada’s Grandchildren. The interment followed the luncheon at the Castor Cemetery where Ada was laid to rest beside her husband Alexander.
