Local boy to see his name in lights

Name in Lights 2A local Coronation boy will soon be hitting the big time. Joe Brigley (11) was recently chosen as the understudy of Michael Banks, a leading role in the Broadway Performance Mary Poppins, for the spring 2014 production in Calgary and Edmonton.
Joe will be the understudy for the main role of Banks, as well as part of the ensemble in the play.
The whirlwind experience began when the Brigleys heard of the auditions while they happened to be in Edmonton where the trials were being held. “I asked Joe if he was interested, and he said ‘yes!’” says mom Brenda Brigley, “so he went to the audition and three days later he got the part.”
Joe will have four months of relative normalcy before diving into the world of Broadway theatrics. “My first day of practice starts on February 18,” says Joe, with Brenda adding that in total it will be four weeks of rehearsal, six days per week and eight hours per day. The play will then run for five weeks in Edmonton – from March to April – and then Calgary from May until June.
Joe has a keen interest in performing; he has been taking musical theatre, singing and vocal lessons at a school in Stettler for four years.
“I also went to music camp, where they do mini plays that are 15 minutes to half an hour long,” he says. He has also been to provincial festival three times, placing second in 2013.
“It’s quite an accomplishment, because he’s two years younger than most of the competitors,” Brenda notes.
When asked if he sees theatre as a route he’d like to take in life, Joe seems excited but realistic. “We’ll see how this goes!” he says.
