In 1941, at the age of 22, James married Mary Tym from Beauvallon, Alberta. At his passing, they had been married 71 years. In 1943 they acquired land and started to raise cattle and grain on their farm. They were blessed with four children who were born in the seven years from 1944 to 1951: Ron, Darlene, Ellen and Lawrence. The land that James and Mary purchased in 1943 is considered by all the family to be “the home place.” James lived there for 69 years until May of this year when declining health sent him to the Coronation Hospital and then on to the Coronation Nursing Home.
James was endlessly inquisitive and passionate about learning. Through books, travel, talking to people, educational TV programming, involvement in boards and committees, he learned; he was an excellent example to all of a passionate life-long learner.
James was intensely independent, determined, full of tenacity, and had a strong sense of responsibility, fairness and love. It was important to him that he stand up for the right and speak his mind in whatever circle of influence he was in – be it his family, his church, or the school boards and committees that he served on.
Two elements that were central to his life were his love for God and his love for his family. He had an unwavering determination to share his faith and beliefs wherever he could – through conversations or through the Christian videos that he shared. Throughout his life, his message of unconditional love was extended to his children, their spouses and his grandchildren. His love, guidance and wisdom will be greatly missed.
James is survived by his loving wife, Mary of Lacombe Extended Care Centre; children: Ron (Connie) Letniak of Hemaruka; Darlene (Paul) Karmy of Texas; Ellen (Bob) Bell of Lacombe, AB; Lawrence (Debbie) Letniak of Hemaruka; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; as well as many other relatives. James was predeceased by his parents George and Bessie (Warchomika) Letniak and his two brothers, Bill and Andrew Letniak.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the Full Gospel Church in Veteran, Alberta. Heather Caseley of Coronation Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements. 1-888-578-2928
