The Hanna Roundhouse Rehabilitation Project has been awarded $550,000 to complete Phase 1 of a rehabilitation project by March 31, 2025!

A Planning Study for Harvest Sky Economic Development Corporation and the Hanna Roundhouse Society (HRS) was developed by Kei Space Design, Vancouver, B.C, Nov. 23, 2022.

Rehabilitation measures were proposed in several phases to revive the 1913 Canadian Northern Railway Roundhouse in Hanna, Alta.

The Harvest Sky Economic Development Corporation manager in Hanna will be responsible for the funds awarded following his successful application, and will handle all the grant reporting requirements.

The HRS president will work closely with Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd. project engineer and HRS’s heritage advisor as site manager.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to start June 17, 2024 and must be completed by March 31, 2025.

Completing Phase 1 will bring utilities and heated washrooms back into the roundhouse, removed in 1992 when the auction market closed after operating in the roundhouse since 1974.

This construction will provide incredible support for the Hanna Roundhouse Society, owner/operator of this 1913 roundhouse, to continue protecting, preserving and restoring this provincial historic resource and it’s history.

Hard work and dedication by HRS volunteers since it’s non-profit registration Jan. 10, 2010 continues to attract history buffs to this unique railway building.

However, the $550,000 awarded will attract new activities to Hanna and generate more restoration opportunities to revitalize and preserve the D.B. Hanna Roundhouse (1913).

D.B. (David Blythe) Hanna, the namesake for the town as he was the first president of Canadian National Railway.  He always went by D.B. and the Hanna Roundhouse was branded as D.B Hanna Roundhouse (1913) since without him, the Town of Hanna would be located somewhere else.

It will contribute greatly to honouring Hanna’s history and supporting Hanna’s community!
