Halkirk votes to dissolve village, become a hamlet

The votes were counted Oct. 9, following a two-day election held Oct. 8 and 9, to determine the future of the Village of Halkirk.

Residents were asked to vote on the following question with 50 valid ballots cast and one being rejected.

Based on the findings of the Village of Halkirk viability review and updated report, which of the two options do you support for the future of Halkirk?

Option one, received zero votes, that the Village of Halkirk remains a village and implements changes to achieve viability.

Option two, received 50 votes, That the Village of Halkirk dissolve and become a hamlet of the County of Paintearth.

With 100 per cent of the valid ballots in favour of dissolution, the Village of Halkirk will move forward with becoming a hamlet.

Under sections 96(4) and 97(4) of the Local Authorities Election Act, when a majority of voters support dissolution, the minister is required to recommend the village’s dissolution to cabinet, ensuring a smooth transition of services.  Until then, the village will continue to operate as per usual.
