Marelyn Doreen Goldthorpe 1939-2022

Sewing, dancing and family important

April 24, 1939 – July 16, 2022 – 83 Years

Marelyn passed away peacefully at the Stettler Hospital with family by her side.

Marelyn put up a strong fight against cancer this past two years.

Marelyn was born in Athabasca, Alta. to Oscar and Annie Schwitz. She was the eldest of three children. To follow were her brothers Melvin and Marvin. They later moved to Veteran, Alta. where Marelyn and her brothers attended school.

At an early age Marelyn was predeceased by her mother and was then the caregiver to her younger brothers. Once they were old enough Marelyn got a job with AGT (Alberta Government Telephones) as a telephone operator.

In June 1960 Marelyn married Neal Gordon Goldthorpe and to this union Colleen and Calvin were born.

After moving to Stettler Marelyn began babysitting in her home for 20 years. To her children she was affectionately known or called Mom Mom.

She also loved to sew and spent many hours creating and sewing. One of her proudest accomplishments was a square dance dress she sewed without a pattern, just a vision from her heart. She loved to dance and her and Bob spent many a weekend dancing and visiting with friends.

Marelyn’s love for family was very evident and at the top of her list especially was spending time with her granddaughters and her great grandsons.

Marelyn is survived by her children Colleen (Ray) Zarowny, Calvin (Karen) Goldthorpe, granddaughters Tia-Cherise (Ryan), Clarke and Rayelle (Taylor) Duzan; great grandsons Espin and Bryken Clarke and Rory Duzan; brother Marvin Schwitz; close friends Nancy Rider and Tom and Jody Fisher; as well as numerous other relatives and many dear friends.

Marelyn is predeceased by parents Oscar and Anne Schwitz; brother Melvin; sister-in-law Marjorie Schwitz; special friend Robert Johnstone and Colleen and Calvin’s father Neal Goldthorpe.

Stettler Funeral Home & Crematorium were entrusted with the care and funeral arrangements. For further information please call 403-742-3422.
