Gilbertson, Mary Dorothy

Mary Dorothy Gilbertson passed away peacefully June 1, six days short of her 81st birthday. She was able to do so in her own home with her loving family by her side.

Mary was born June 7, 1933, in Bodo, AB, to Simon and Stephania Kozlinski, the youngest of six children.

Growing up, Mary enjoyed gardening, cards, dancing and attending rodeos. It was during a dance that she met Jim Gilbertson. Later, they were married. Into the union came Dwaine and in subsequent years, five more children were born: Cody, Kathy, Shane, Tami and Roxanne.

Jim and Mary lived on the original Gilbertson homestead just south of Silver Heights, where they continued to operate a mixed farm until the early 1990s.

Mary spent many hours enjoying her gardening and beautifying her yard. There was never a bad garden, year after year, every type of flower, vegetable, fruit and tree could be found. Farm hands never went hungry or thirsty with Mary there. The coffee pot seemed bottomless and welcoming for the many visitors who were bound to pass through for food, coffee and a laugh.

Unfortunately, their farming life came to a close due to Jim’s failing health, leading Mary to begin their next chapter in Coronation. Mary spent many hours at the hospital until Jim’s death in 2001. Being in Coronation did bring some happiness in the form of wonderful friendships, having Frances Forrest right next door. Many 2 a.m. card games continued despite the location change, and the “magic” bottomless coffee pot continued to remain.

Even after her hip replacement, which had slowed her down, she was sure to keep the yard up to her standards by spending many hours beautifying. She won Communities in Bloom awards for her efforts.

She was very involved with her family and taught them many unconventional and sometimes inappropriate lessons. The whole family embraced this, and it was meant with whole-hearted love.  She maintained her unique disposition into her final moments, with her own brand of colourful humour, renewing our good moods.

It’s with great sorrow, and woven with many fond memories that we say farewell to a wonderful, caring, and generous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be forever in our hearts, and will continue to live on through each and every one of us.
