Fiss, Murray Henry

 

Murray Henry Fiss passed away in Our Lady of Rosary Hospital in Castor, A. on Friday, July 10, 2015 at the of 91 years, two months and five days.
Murray was born at home in Alliance, Alberta and lived in the Battle River area across the road from Green View School.  Murray attended Green View School and at the age of 17 entered The Royal Canadian Air Force.
Murray trained as Flight Officer in High River, Ab. and Virden, Manitoba and received his Wings in 1945. He then came back to the family farm and later met and married Helen Gibson of Castor, Alberta.
The couple farmed until 1957 at which time they moved into the Town of Castor.  He worked for Canadian Propane as a serviceman then got into water conditioning and expanded his business into plumbing and sheet metal.
He later established Castor Sheet Metal Ltd. in the old town hall; additional businesses included Castor Coin Laundry, Castor Car Wash and Castor Trailer Court. Murray maintained the family farm until the 1970’s.
Murray is predeceased by his loving wife Helen Fiss (Gibson), father Henry Fiss, mother Annie Fiss, brothers Norman and Fred and sisters Ethel and Muriel Fiss.
He is survived by his four children Darrell, Brian, Sharon and Marlene and four grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family.
Murray was a good father, great business man and loyal friend.
Funeral services were held at the Castor Community Hall on Thursday, July 16, 2015 with Rev. Barbara Zimmerman officiating.
Cathy Shaffner played for the musical selections. Tributes were given by Vern Hein and Marlene Fiss.  The Royal Canadian Legion performed the Last Post Service and Reveille; Bag Piper Stuart Somerville piped at the hall and cemetery as Murray was laid to rest in the Field of Honour Legion Cemetery, beside his wife Helen.
Honourary pallbearers were Percy Farebrother, Dennis Filipenko, Joe Neumeier, Chris Thumlert, Clayton Richardson, Dave Robinson, Orest Luciak, Bill Simpson, Larry Bogath, and the Royal Canadian Legion.
Active pallbearers were Brandon Barthel, Scott Barthel, Fred Fiss, Brian Fiss, Bonny Fiss, Doug Sprake, Neil Fiss and Darrell Fiss.  Family and friends gathered in the community hall for a time of fellowship and refreshments prepared and served by Ann Michielsen and staff.
