Written by Sarah Baker

Elnora village council decided during the meeting on Thurs. Dec. 8 the library will be moving to a new location as the current building is no longer usable.

With the necessary move, the utility fees for the library will also be waived during the closure period.

Elnora council is planning on applying for funding for the new library.

During the discussion, the idea of building a multi-purpose facility was also brought forward.

“We’re even looking for a multiplex too, so we can put the town office, the youth centre and the library in a space,” said Mayor Jul Bissel.

A temporary library will be put in place sometime in January with more information in regard to the location coming at a later date.

Pump house upgrades

The pump house in Elnora is being upgraded by Tagish Engineering.

Materials for the upgrade will be ordered now that the proposal has been approved by council.

The hope for the project is to bring the pump house building back to being usable for another 20 years.

Mayor Bissel made the motion to accept the design as proposed which was carried unanimously.

Garbage agreement

Council unanimously approved the five-year agreement for weekly garbage pick-up during the summer months of June, July and August.

The cost for the five-year period agreement will be $13.04 per residence per month.

Community awards

Somewhere towards the end of the year the community of Elnora may be seeing a new awards ceremony as suggested by Mayor Bissel during his Mayors report.

“I think it would be a really good thing for the community,” said Bissel.

The idea came forward due to the success of the celebration honouring local community member Anna Mose who was a recipient of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal.

The idea for the new awards is to get the community together to talk, fundraise and celebrate achievements with a couple of little awards.

“This is something we should do for the community,” said Bissel.

More discussion of the possibility of the community awards will come forward at a future meeting.

Other business

Council approved unanimously the a motion to apply for the Provincial Education Requisition Credit (PERC) to compensate for the write-off of outstanding taxes for two oil companies which have declared bankruptcy.

Council decided to get a membership for the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance which was approved unanimously.

The Red Deer Regional hospital will be getting an expansion.

“This is something that should’ve been done years ago,” said Deputy Mayor Ron Duft during the discussion on the topic.

Mayor Bissel made the motion to accept as information which was approved unanimously.

Elnora council accepted the County of Red Deer enforcement contract as information.

“I think I have only ever seen one ticket issued,” said Coun. Ferguson during the discussion.

The decision to accept the contract as information was approved unanimously.
