The Consort Hospital and Care Centre emergency department (ED) will be temporarily closed without physician coverage later this week on August 12 and 13, and next week on August 16.
As a result, the ED will be closed to patients on these days. The ED will remain closed over the weekend when it doesn’t normally operate.
This closure is a temporary measure taken as a last resort.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) is working hard to ensure local residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time, and to keep all other services at the site operating as normal. Inpatient units are not impacted by this closure.
Nursing staff will remain in the ED to assess patients presenting to the department, with phone consults available from the on-call physician in the Coronation ED as needed.
Patients may be referred to emergency departments or other health facilities in surrounding communities depending on their needs.
Patients requiring emergency medical care during this time are asked to call 911. EMS calls will be re-routed to surrounding facilities, including the Coronation Hospital and Care Centre.
During this time, the medical clinic at the Consort Hospital and Care Centre will also be closed and unavailable for new appointments. Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7, for non-emergency, health-related questions.
This temporary closure is a last resort, after all options to secure physician coverage have been exhausted.
Alberta Health Services will continue efforts to bring in locum coverage over the coming days to minimize the closure as much as possible.
