Twelve schools from Clearview took part in the 2017 Terry Fox Runs and raised $35,425.70 to benefit cancer research.
Wendy Kennelly, Provincial Director for the Terry Fox Foundation, stated in a letter to Clearview, “We are proud to work with you to foster volunteerism, compassion and leadership of Clearview Public Schools students.”
Clearview Public Schools is proud of the staff and students as they work hard each year to organize and participate in the Terry Fox Runs to support this worthy cause.
Terry Fox’s story is a defining piece of Canadian history and has become an integral part of the Alberta curriculum.
Last year raised close to $30 million.
This year the Terry Fox Foundation is stepping up their efforts to support student growth during the Terry Fox events.
Initiatives such as the ‘Be Like Terry’ program are giving students the opportunity to develop leadership, philanthropy and service skills.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions around the world in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research.
The event was founded in 1981 by Isadore Sharp, who contacted Terry in hospital by telegram and expressed his wishes to hold an annual run in Terry’s name to raise funds for cancer research.
Sharp himself had lost a son to cancer in 1979. The event is held every year on the second Sunday following Labour Day.
