Trochu and District Ag Society had a very exciting and very busy two weekends starting with our 2nd Annual Bull-a-Rama on June 24 with about 600 in attendance. We are looking forward to next year’s event already booked for June 22, 2024. We hope to have increased seating capacity and more food trucks, cotton candy and, of course, Mutton Bustin again.
We had our annual Junior Rodeo on June 30, July 1. Attendance was up for this event as well. We had local entries added into the mix which brought out a lot of familiar faces.
Also part of this year’s long weekend activities included bouncy castles, petting zoo, face painting, stick pony races, vendors, trick riders and beer gardens.
We even had a bonus of meeting and presenting flowers to legend trick rider, Claire (Dewar) Roberts.
Claire and her sister Lois were recognized as the first ladies to trick ride professionally in Canada in the 1950’s. Both Claire and Lois also barrel-raced and Claire helped found the Saskatchewan Girls Barrel Racing Association.
In 2009 Claire and Lois along with their brother Don Dewar were all inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.
Saturday night we had our annual ball tournament dance with over 300 attending. Always a fun time.

The Dewar Sisters
Claire and her husband Nelson Roberts lived in the CNR train station in Three Hills from 1979 – 1984. Nelson was the last agent/operator in Three Hills.
Claire and her sister Lois grew up on a farm near Hoosier, Sask. in the 1930s and 40s. They were constantly doing tricks on their horses out on the bald prairie.
Their brother Don Dewar, a Canadian Pro Rodeo member, told them girls were getting paid to trick ride in the United States.
A dream was born. As teenagers, they got Riley & McCormick in Calgary to make trick riding saddles and their own personalized tack. Claire negotiated contracts with stock contractors like Harry Vold, Reg Kesler in Alberta, Jerry Meyes in Saskatchewan and Cliff Claggett in Manitoba.
Claire designed and sewed all of their show outfits. In 1950 they were even models for GWG clothing.
The Dewar Sisters performed at rodeos, parades and fairs all across North America. In the 1950’s they were recognized as the first ladies to trick ride professionally in Canada.
Both Claire and Lois also barrel raced and Claire helped found the Saskatchewan Girls Barrel Racing Association. In 2009 Claire and Lois along with their brother Don Dewar were all inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.
Claire has recently moved back to Three Hills to be close to family.
