The squeak of sneakers against gymnasium floors rang through Coronation on Saturday, October 13, as Coronation School was host to a junior B volleyball tournament.
Teams from Tilley, Donalda, Brownfield, Theresetta and the host Coronation vied for top spot in the day-long tournament.
All teams played strong, with event organizers praising the participants for their sportsmanship and respect.
The boys final saw the Brownfield Bobcats facing off against the Coronation Saints. Coronation won the first set handily, leaving the Bobcats to lick their wounds. The loss lit a fire underneath Brownfield, who rallied against the Saints and won the next two sets to grab the gold. The girls from Brownfield also won gold, just squeaking past Donalda in a very close and well-played match.
“It was a really good tournament,” said Brownfield boys’ coach Garry Thomson, crediting teamwork and dedication for their victory. The loss of his team’s first set, according to Thomson, gave his team the inspiration necessary to win the next two and capture the medal.
Tournament organizer Melissa Pasolli praised the participants for their hard work and sportsmanship and appreciated that many of the teams allowed their younger players time on the court.
The school volleyball season is quickly drawing to a close with the Clearview and Region Athletics (CARA) volleyball playoffs taking place the second week of November.
