The Coronation Senior Angels volleyball team is bringing our season to a close with authority. We finished 6 – 0 in league play and were therefore the hosts of league finals on Tuesday, October 30. The girls had a great pair of matches at league finals, beating fourth place Consort in two straight sets, and then went on to defeat Provost Public School in two straight sets very convincingly. This was probably the best the girls played all year.
It was a lot of fun to watch. Because we won league, we again hosted area playdowns this past weekend. This saw two of the same teams from playoffs, Castor and Provost, as well as St. Thomas Aquinas (Provost separate), Chauvin and Wainwright. The girls played well enough to go on to another playdown on our way to zones by finishing third. We didn’t have our best weekend, as we may very well have had the best team there, but we let Chauvin come back and take the last two sets of our match, which took us out of the final and a guaranteed spot in Zones. This was the only match we lost however, so I am hoping the girls stay inspired for the rest of the season.
The girls have also brought home gold in their last two tournaments in Consort and Hughenden respectively. We finished first in the round robin of both of the tournaments, and then took both finals in two straight. The girls are playing very well, and have had good showings all year long, losing out in the semifinals to Vermilion, a 32 team tournament and the same result in Augustana College in Camrose. We took a silver medal in Our Lady Mount Pleasant in Camrose as well, losing a tight match to a strong Bawlf team in the final. The girls have been working on varying the attack across the front row and utilizing our strong back row attack.
Our defense has been getting stronger every game, with Erin Tellier as our defensive specialist really finding her game this year and taking control in the back row. Our three middles, Kaitlynn Tange, Jenna Wuzinski and Chelsey Gerber have been great defensively with their blocking and have been working on their quick attacks a great deal in the past couple of weeks. It could be argued that Kaitlynn Tange, our grade 12 middle, is one of the best blockers we have seen all year.
Our powers, Alyssa Severin, Cassidy Gardiner, Lauren Copan and Ashley Golby are all very strong both offensively and defensively. Our grade 12 power, Alyssa hits the ball as hard as anyone at this level, and goes through the wall to get a ball on defense. Our two grade 11 powers, Copan and Gardiner, have both really blossomed as players this year and play very consistently.
Ashley, our one lone Grade 10 power is a very strong player and works hard at her game every practice and will be a key to the future. Our setters consist of Brooke Lindmark, a Grade 10 player who is a big part of our success, and a very impressive player. Last, but certainly not least is our grade 12 setter and team captain, Tori Canadine, who has been the backbone of the team on and off the court.
She is a very consistent player who reads the court well and has excellent leadership skills. I am looking forward to a strong finish this season, as the girls have been very focused and working hard to reach their full potential. Come out and support them to see some great volleyball.
