Once a year, in honour of those who helped to build the community, the Big Valley Legion puts on a dinner to celebrate area pioneers.
The Legion’s annual Pioneer Dinner was held on Dec. 9 with approximately 147 invited guests attending.
This year marks the 53rd year this annual event has been hosted in the Community Hall.
The dinner has been going on longer than the Hall has been around.
In previous years, the event was held at the Big Valley Inn, with nine people attending the first dinner.
According to Legion president and event emcee, Lorne Parkin, the community has been blessed with many pioneers who have laid down traditions that are still upheld today by those who follow in their footsteps.
After dinner, Parkin recognized all those in attendance who were born before 1942.
In particular, he congratulated Otto Nicklom, born in 1920, the eldest guest at the event.
