Battle River Credit Union and Horizon Credit Union discuss merger

The Boards of Directors of Battle River Credit Union and Caisse Horizon (Horizon) Credit Union confirmed Monday, December 9 that they have entered into formal discussions to investigate the amalgamation of their two credit unions.  Once discussions have been successfully concluded, Battle River Credit Union will welcome the members, branches and staff of Horizon into their operations effective April 1, 2014.
If the required regulatory approvals are received and both organizations’ members vote in favour of this growth opportunity, the amalgamated Credit Union will serve over 25,000 members at 17 branch locations, with more than 160 staff members and approximately $810 million in assets.  In early 2014 a process will be launched to select a new name for the merged credit union.
“Battle River and Horizon share the same vision of a strong, sustainable regional credit union that is differentiated based on its local orientation, quality of personalized service, and advice,” announced Credit Union Board Chairs Alan Fielding (Battle River) and Reg Bouchard (Horizon).
“The two legacy credit unions operate in similar communities without overlapping branches and have complementary management team skills and resources.  Combined, the two credit unions will immediately create a stronger and more robust organization,” shared Battle River CEO Steve Friend.
Horizon Credit Union CEO, Trudy Rasmuson views this merger as “an excellent opportunity for the two credit unions that have the same vision for the future, to partner to build on combined strengths for the benefit of members, communities and staff.  Our merger is all about being better together and growing for the future.”
