Doreen Barnes

Doreen Anne Barnes passed away at the Coronation Long Term Care facility on Nov. 20, 2023 at the age of 85 years.

Doreen was the first child of John and Annie Vigen of the Lake Thelma district. A couple years later, twins Bob and Betty arrived.

Doreen started school by correspondence, taught by her mom, Annie Vigen. Early grades were in the country schools and from Grades 9-12 were completed in Coronation where she graduated in 1956.

After graduation, Doreen worked at the Coronation Hospital and Bank of Toronto for the next two years until the marriage to Bob in April 1958.

Bob and Doreen lived in the small house on the farm at Brownfield, with Grandpa and Grandma Barnes’ living on the hill.

After a few years, it was decided to change houses with G & G Barnes, as three girls were growing up, they needed to make more room.

In 1978 the big house was replaced with a new modular.

Doreen was at home, enjoying her sewing and crafts. Time was also spent at the Brownfield Curling Rink, curling or helping in the kitchen for a bonspiel. She was a member of the Brownfield Ladies Aid and played piano at Brownfield United Church.

Doreen’s sewing and handicrafts included sewing clothes for the girls, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, and altering many dress pants and other clothing.

She shared her love of sewing to the ladies in the community by teaching how to sew blue jeans, and later there were quilting classes.

In 1985, Bob and Doreen moved to Tees, Alta. In Tees, golfing, bowling, Fifty Plus group, bookkeeping for the Ag Society and The Pacing Club kept her busy along with the quilting, where many, many quilts were completed.

They moved from Tees to a house in Stettler in 2013 and eventually moved to Willow Creek Lodge in July 2019.

Doreen is survived by her daughters, Lorna (Alister) McKenzie and Barbara Barnes; grandchildren – Scott (Cara), Colin (Kristi), Alana McKenzie and Brandon (Paige) Barnes; great-granddaughters Holly, Callie and Lacey McKenzie; brother Robert (Alberta) Vigen; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Doug) Noad and Rose Barnes; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
