Dear Editor,
Albertans deserve better than a Finance Minister willing to gamble their pension away based on a “a high-level feeling’, says the Alberta NDP.
This past weekend, UCP Finance Minister Nate Horner told a national television audience that the decision on whether to pull out of the Canada Pension Plan would be based on a “high-level from many sources.”
The UCP’s so-called public consultation has faced widespread criticism as no sessions are currently planned in-person and the government’s own survey on leaving CPP doesn’t even ask Albertans if they support the move.
“This is how people choose a restaurant for dinner, not make life-changing decisions on gambling away retirement security,” said Shannon Phillips, Alberta NDP Finance Critic for Pension & Insurance Issues.
“It’s clear this government changes the rules every day as they face more and more backlash for this horrible plan to sink our national pension. Albertans work hard for their pensions. I think the Minister should park his ‘feelings’ and commit today to leaving CPP alone.”
To date, more than 33,000 Albertans have responded to a survey launched by the Alberta NDP that actually asks if they support leaving CPP — to date, more than 90 per cent have responded that they do not.
